I don’t like writing long-winded blog posts, but the fact that this was one of the coolest experiences we have had in any of our bands impels me to elaborate. Hopefully other, bigger bands will take note and track them down for a session. Are you listening Bono, Chris Martin and Right Said Fred? You can’t even get 4-star treatment like this on your private jets. Continue reading →
The first Unplugged Mutts show went great, and we’ll be doing it monthly starting on June 10th. Our first Mutts & Friends set featured Ben from This is Cinema on clarinet and bass clarinet, while Mike played acoustic piano and Bob switched to upright bass. We’re looking forward to welcoming more friends from the Chicago music community, playing more covers and writing new Mutts tunes for this arrangement.
Thanks to everyone who has been signing up for our Newsletter. Congratulations to Paul from Medford, OR, who won this week’s drawing. Make sure to check out Paul’s band – a surfy garage rock quartet called The Nautics.
Unplugged Mutts = Mike plays acoustic piano while Bob switches to upright bass. We’ll put a new spin on songs from our EPs, preview our upcoming LP, dust off Mike’s solo album, pull out end-of-the-week covers mercifully not including “Everybody’s Working for the Weekend,” and welcome special guests from around the Chicago music community.
The response in the first week was pretty cool, thanks to everyone who signed up for our Newsletter. Congratulations to Leslie from Chicago, who won the first week’s trio of autographed Mutts EPs. We’re picking another one next week, and tossing around some fun ideas for that one-of-a-kind merch surprise at the end of the month.
It’s a family affair – Bob used to play with Suns’ singer Mike Russell in Wax on Radio. I now play keys with Bailiff. Dan Smart of Field Aux is recording our album. Come early, and get ready for a good long night of music!
Here’s a video journal from our first session at Dan Smart’s home studio, the place we’ll record much of our new album. We tracked keys, bass and drums live, then added vocals and some auxiliary bits of keys and tambourine. This video has an un-mastered rough mix of the tune, “Not Ready.”
Bob Buckstaff – Bass, camera, acoustic guitar
Chris Faller – Drums, tambo, dissonance
Mike Maimone – Keys, vocals, Wild Turkey
Dan Smart – Microphones, Widgets, Gadgets
Even though we’re just one day into recording and but one song tracked, we are excited to get a full-length album out by the end of this year. Wish us luck. And in the meantime, our first 3 EPs are still free at: download.muttsmusic.com
It’s a Mutt sandwich – take a big old bite. The secret sauce is a couple brand new songs. First up is Basho, then us, and then the marvelous Michael Lux and the Bad Sons – who kindly made this nifty poster for the show. Thanks, and see you there!
It’s our first show at Bottom Lounge, a great Chicago venue – with delicious food, too. We’re playing with one of our best friends – Michael Lux and the Bad Sons. Doors at 8:30, we hit at 9:30, and it’s free if you get there before 10. Thanks, and we hope to see you there!
It’s our first time headlining Double Door, and it’s FREE. New songs, special guests, and free CDs. Doors at 7:30, we hit at 10. Please help us make our first headlining set at one of our favorite clubs a special night – spread the word, invite friends, hit up the Facebook Event page. Thanks, and see you there!
It’s our last show of the year. We’re excited to play New Year’s Eve’s Eve; you can never have too much party, and there’s no pressure to stand next to someone you want to kiss at midnight. Free CDs as always. And you can kiss Bob at midnight.
Back-to-back first shows at some amazing staples of the Chicago music scene. We played Schuba’s last month, now the Empty Bottle. And this time it’s free! Just email your name to: firstname.lastname@example.org, subject line ‘betta’ and you’ll be on the free admission list. As always, CDs are free at our shows. Come pick up copies of both of our EPs, and hear us play new tracks from The Tells of Parallels EP, coming October 1st.
Check it out, we won Chicago Artist of the Month on The Deli. Thanks to everyone who voted for us. This August we’ve got a show at Schuba’s (8/30), and a new track from our 3rd EP going online very soon.
It’s our first show at this staple of the Chicago music scene. As always, CDs are free at our shows. Come pick up copies of both of our EPs, and hear us play new tracks from The Tells of Parallels EP, coming in October.
After tracking our 3rd EP at the end of May, we’ve all been up to separate musical endeavors. Chris and I are in LA recording with Company of Thieves, and Bob has been working on a solo project while playing with a couple great bands in Chicago. Jon Alvin just finished mixing our 5 new tracks, and the EP – The Tells of Parallels – should be ready to release by September. We’ll get back to playing shows in August and throw a CD release party in the fall.
Now that I think of it, I’m not even sure why we’re printing CDs these days, other than to throw a party. Because “MP3 Release Party” just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
One thousand We Float EP’s are making their way to our door right this minute. We apologize for this irresponsibly excessive use of the interweb, but we’re excited to get these little guys in our hands, and then yours.
