I don’t like writing long-winded blog posts, but the fact that this was one of the coolest experiences we have had in any of our bands impels me to elaborate. Hopefully other, bigger bands will take note and track them down for a session. Are you listening Bono, Chris Martin and Right Said Fred? You can’t even get 4-star treatment like this on your private jets.

The first Unplugged Mutts show went great, and we’ll be doing it monthly starting on June 10th. We’re looking forward to welcoming more friends from the Chicago music community, playing more covers and writing new Mutts tunes for this arrangement.

Unplugged Mutts = Mike plays acoustic piano while Bob switches to upright bass. We’ll put a new spin on songs from our EPs, preview our upcoming LP, dust off Mike’s solo album, pull out end-of-the-week covers mercifully not including “Everybody’s Working for the Weekend,” and welcome special guests from around the Chicago music community.

Newsletter Contest Update

The response in the first week was pretty cool, thanks to everyone who signed up for our Newsletter. Congratulations to Leslie from Chicago, who won the first week’s trio of autographed Mutts EPs. We’re picking another one next week, and tossing around some fun ideas for that one-of-a-kind merch surprise at the end of the month.

Mailing List Contest

Win free signed Mutts EPs, handmade merch or an autographed copy of the forthcoming LP.

Sign up for the Mutts Mailing List using the box on the left to enter!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Each week we will randomly select one newsletter subscriber to win all 3 Mutts CDs.
  2. Once per month we’ll select a subscriber to get a unique Mutts treasure.
  3. The grand prize will be a signed LP to 5 newsletter members this Fall.
  4. We will email the winner(s) each Sunday to find out where they’d like the goods sent – so keep an eye on that inbox.

Thanks for listening, spreading the word about Mutts, and keeping in touch!

Recording | Day 1 | Video

Here’s a video journal from our first session at Dan Smart’s home studio, the place we’ll record much of our new album. We tracked keys, bass and drums live, then added vocals and some auxiliary bits of keys and tambourine. This video has an un-mastered rough mix of the tune, “Not Ready.”

Bob Buckstaff – Bass, camera, acoustic guitar
Chris Faller – Drums, tambo, dissonance
Mike Maimone – Keys, vocals, Wild Turkey
Dan Smart – Microphones, Widgets, Gadgets

Even though we’re just one day into recording and but one song tracked, we are excited to get a full-length album out by the end of this year. Wish us luck. And in the meantime, our first 3 EPs are still free at:

Summer hangs, and a new EP

Mutts - summer hangs

After tracking our 3rd EP at the end of May, we’ve all been up to separate musical endeavors. Chris and I are in LA recording with Company of Thieves, and Bob has been working on a solo project while playing with a couple great bands in Chicago. Jon Alvin just finished mixing our 5 new tracks, and the EP – The Tells of Parallels – should be ready to release by September. We’ll get back to playing shows in August and throw a CD release party in the fall.

Now that I think of it, I’m not even sure why we’re printing CDs these days, other than to throw a party. Because “MP3 Release Party” just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
